Wake up call!

We had a real wake up experience Thursday night. The television and the internet went out. Totally. Now we have had this happen before, but this outage lasted way past bedtime.

I really got a kick out of watching the two of us adjust to the change in our normal routine. First I made a list -- what can I accomplish without the internet?

We sorted hubby's golf balls, went through a stack of papers on the kitchen table, laughed at our misery and addiction to electronics and went to bed very early!

It was really such a strange feeling. I do not think I watch much television, but I do use it for background noise, I guess. We listened to the radio Thursday night!

When I woke up the next morning, I flipped the tv on first thing-- I never do that! But I had to know if we were reconnected to the world. With relief, I realized we were alive again.

I continue to ponder this event. What a shock! I had no idea I was so addicted! I was surprised at how quickly my "head noise" and "self talk" cleared. I think I will have more tv and internet vacations in the future! While it is nice to be connected to the world 24/7, it is also very nice to take a break and just be!

Believe in Yourself

Our granddaughter was playing with her new birthday doll -- and I was sitting on the floor in her room, just watching, chatting, "being" whatever character she needed!

She asked, "Joan-Joan, do you want me to fix your hair in a ponytail?"
I said, "Oh, I think my hair is much too short for a ponytail!"
She replied, "Joan-Joan, if you want to try to something new, you have to believe in yourself!"

I was shocked - and of course, very pleased with her remark. It is a strong statement for a 7 year old! A very true statement, but very unusual for a little girl, I thought. Later, I asked her mom about it - "do you think she learned that from one of us, or is that school training?" We agreed that no matter where she learned that statement, or whether she understands it, we are delighted that she knows and believes those important words.

Besides grinning every time I think about this little event, I think there are some important lessons in it --
1. You never know what your child is hearing you say -- so be careful with those words!
2. Children understand much more than we think they do.
3. It's never too early to teach positive thought.

PS -- Yep! I ended up with a little 1" ponytail and butterfly baretts! I have never looked any more beautiful than I did at that moment, for sure! It sure felt pretty!

Grandma Joys

We are having so much fun with the grandchildren this week. Both children play on a "coach-pitch" baseball team, so there were two of those games - and our granddaughter missed both games because she was in dress rehearsals for her ballet, Hansel and Gretel.

Last night we took Zachary to his game, then to a couple of innings at the Winthrop University baseball game, and then to dinner at our favorite spot, the Dutch Mill! What fun!

Little Jessica was in her first performance last night - the family is attending the Sunday afternoon performance - so last night, son Randy took her to perform. They called on the way home and she was so excited! Jessica is almost 7 years old and of course, her mommy had her all made up for the show. She said, "Joan-Joan, I look like a grown up!" lol I said, "do you think I would recognize you?" She said, "No, I am very grown up." Delightful! Last night she felt like a princess. Her mom had bought her a t-shirt from the ballet and had it folded on her pillow with a ribbon around it when she got home. And of course her good daddy had flowers for her at the end of the show!

I am always touched by the love that surrounds these two children - how they bless our lives, for sure -- but I think of children who never hear those positive words of love, who are never encouraged, supported in their interests or boosted along the way. I am thankful that our grandchildren are so blessed.

Do you know a child you could sincerely compliment this week? Please do. The child may be desperate for positive words -- and your words could make such a huge difference.

Every child is special and every child deserves our support!

You at 50

I was touched by this and thought I would share it...

This is amazingly creative!

Pay close attention to this - as it is read forward and, then, backward.

This is a video that was submitted in a contest by a 20 year old. The contest was Titled 'u @ 50'.This video won second place. When they showed it, everyone in the room was awe-struck and broke into spontaneous applause. So simple and yet so
brilliant.
Take a minute and watch it.

Take Time to Be

My kindergarten grandson told me yesterday that at their school, right after lunch, they have "time to be". I said, "What is time to be?" He said, "Oh, it's just time for a little nap."

I love that concept. Teaching children the idea of taking time to just "be" not "do". We all need to return to that kind of thinking!

It is my most sincere hope that today you will take "time to be." Sit on your porch, take a walk, spend some minutes in the present moment. Enjoy! Or as my friend, Kate reminds me, "In Joy!" Indeed!

Family Fun

We had such a fun family dinner last night. This morning I am filled with gratitude. Our son and his family returned from a week at Disney World. They came here as soon as they got back to town, and soon our daughter joined us too. Her hubby was still at work, so we missed him!

The children were talking as fast as they could talk, sharing their fun experiences at Disney - and so were their mom and dad. We laughed later, saying it sounded like the grown-ups had as much fun as the children.

But the point this morning is simply the joy of such simple things - family around the table, happy laughing children, a good country dinner, and a wonderful dessert of candy from Chef Keem ! The candy arrived yesterday - just in time for our celebration! and oh, it was so good!

Enjoy the day! Have fun! Be thankful! One of my favorite little quotes is "Normal day, let me be aware of the treasure you are!" We treasured the normalcy of our evening! May you do the same today!

Be Positive

I have been honored - so deeply touched -- that I scarcely know what to say. My friend, Mimi, Growwear on Squidoo, created a lens all about me! She even had my sisters in on her big secret! Their interviews and insights are on the lens, too!

I was quietly reading my e-mail one night, when I got an e-mail from Mimi. "please take a look at my new lens." lol oh wow. I thought she had just made something new she wanted me to see. and she did. and how!

The lens itself is a huge honor - and then came the visitors and the comments. What a treasure. One of my sisters said, "well, now we have something to read at your funeral." (that's "sister humor", folks - no disrespect intended)

I am still shocked every time I look at it. I hope you will take a look too. What a beautiful gift you could create with a lens like this. Who would you choose?
I challenge you to create a similar lens during the month of February - and honor someone you care about. I will never ever forget this. Just think how much it would mean to your loved one, friend, or co-worker - to have a lens in their honor.

ok. enough. go visit and give Mimi and bunch of stars from me! and thank you!

The Frog Race

Once upon a time there was a bunch of tiny frogs.... who arranged a running competition. The goal was to reach the top of a very high tower.

A big crowd had gathered around the tower to see the race and cheer on the contestants....
The race began....

Honestly:
No one in the crowd really believed that the tiny frogs would reach the
top of the tower.
You heard statements such as:

"Oh, WAY too difficult!!"
"They will NEVER make it to the top."

or:
"Not a chance that they will succeed.
The tower is too high!"
The tiny frogs began collapsing. One by one....
Except for those, who in a fresh tempo, were climbing higher and higher..
The crowd continued to yell, "It is too difficult!!! No one will make it!"
More tiny frogs got tired and gave up....
But ONE continued higher and higher and higher....
This one wouldn't give up!

At the end everyone else had given up climbing the tower. Except for the one tiny frog who, after a big effort, was the only one who reached the top!

THEN all of the other tiny frogs naturally wanted to know how this one frog managed to do it?
A contestant asked the tiny frog how he had found the strength to succeed and reach the goal?

It turned out....
That the winner was DEAF!!!!

The wisdom of this story is:
Never listen to other people's tendencies to be negative or pessimistic....because
they take your most wonderful dreams and wishes away from you -- the ones you have in your heart!

Always think of the power words have. (There's life and death in the power of the tongue - Proverbs 18:21.)

Because everything you hear and read will affect your actions!

Therefore: ALWAYS be.... POSITIVE!

And above all:
Be DEAF when people tell YOU that you cannot fulfill your dreams!

Be Positive

Sometimes life just sends wonderful surprises - and they leave you speechless! That's what happened to me last week. My on-line friend, Growwear(Mimi) sent me an e-mail asking me to take a look at one of her lenses. I do that quite often for people, reviewing for spelling errors, etc, or perhaps just providing the first visit. So......I casually clicked.........and there was ME! The entire lens was about me and my sisters! I did not know whether to cry or laugh or just sit there and shake with shock - so I shook! lol What a wonderful thing to do for a friend - what a super surprise! She had even interviewed my sisters! Since that time, the visitors and comments have kept me in a state of total amazement.

My mother always said "give me my flowers while I can smell 'em". I know now what she meant by that. I feel like I am receiving a bouquet of flowers every single day - and oh so much nicer to enjoy those kind words while I am on this side of life! I plan to hang around in this ol' world for many more years, but in the meantime, I will constantly be refreshed every time I visit that lens. Thank you, Mimi! Such a gift! There are simply not enough words to say thank you adequately.

Oh, do you want to go see it? I just happen to know the link.
